Throughout life we find ourselves experiencing loss, shame, grief, anxiety and other emotions that change our mindset and either make us depressed or worse, our emotions become toxic when we stop managing our emotional upsets during menopause.
During the transition into menopause, many women experience a swing in their emotional state from divine jubilation to grief or rage and vice versa. Dr Christian Northrup says, “Releasing your old emotions and replacing them with loving-kindness towards yourself is like climbing to a mountaintop and breathing clean fresh air.”
In her book, Goddesses Never Age, she provides a guided plan to release old emotions and prevent toxic build-up by managing your emotional upsets during menopause. Here are a few helpful tips:
-
- Cry it Out: Simply allowing yourself to have a good cry can be cathartic and healing. Not only does it offer an instant relief but it recognizes that there is shame, sadness or rage that is being ignored. In fact, she says, weeping in order to let out your feelings is crucial for your health.
- Don’t go digging for buried pain: Generally, when we’re feeling a little off we start thinking back to our past. Focus on the things that are making you emotional now. Stay in the present and deal with the present issues.
- Dance your way to happiness: Another way of releasing emotions is though movement. Eve Ensler, author of Vagina Monologues, urged women to leave work and strike, dance and rise up to end violence against women. Recognize the pain or anger and the move your body into it.
- Meditation, Reiki or Massage your way to freedom: if you are working with a practitioner, make sure to tell them how you are feeling so that they can aid your emotional upset and guide you into release.
- Sing a little song for yourself: Singing and chanting give voice to emotions on a big scale. Sing on your own or in a choir, or start a brand. Even better, wring it down. The art of writing a song, not only offers an emotional relief in retelling an old story but acts as a voice for your feelings.
During the transitional change into Menopause natural hormones such as; Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone, along with cortisol and adrenalin shift and change in the body. It’s no wonder then that you’re experiencing emotional change. Take care in acknowledging this natural state and use this time to deal with suppressed emotions that are in need of release.
